There is still a skirt and sweater to post but that will be a while yet I'm afraid. DD loves her AG clothing... I'll make her more after I finish the man's socks... working on the foot of the 2nd. I get about 7 minutes a day to knit if I'm lucky!

just to mention that I couldn't post in firefox today. Had to open the safari to get this in... a little frustrating

going green

I've been doing much recycling of yarns lately.. more of that than knitting actually. This allows me to in the future knit with yarns that I could never afford to buy new from my LYS or online. I'll be very excited to try some of my new yarns, especially the cashmere and cashmere silk blends I've recently reclaimed.

As the internet allows us to though I've met a woman, mother of 7, who owns 2 etsy shops that deal with greening up our earth by recycling, both yarns and giving sweaters new life in a felted form. Her name is Julie and her two etsy stores, my 7 kids which sells reclaimed fiber from sweaters and Heart Felt Fun which sells really cute recycled felted and hand-knit items. She's also running a Go Green for the Holidays contest on her blog until December 1st. So go visit and enter!

We're going green in this house for Christmas.... I can't give any details, you never know who might be reading ;-)

more booties????

Pattern: Bernat Cot'n Corn Booties
Yarn: Patons Shetland Chunky
Color: Blue
Needle: US7
Recipient: Ulysses

These will be sent to Spain with the tri-jester hat and some family hand knits for DH's cousins baby. Hopefully she'll appreciate all the love in the package that we're sending. Some things were made for our boys and a few were also made for our daughter. Plus these new items. Gotta keep that little fella warm! They were talking about going back to Argentina, but now that's up in the air.

Also worked on these cozies this weekend for my 2 water bottles. They still have some felting to finish. One water bottle is for the 'new' school. Because I'll bring water from home in its frozen state. That bottle has apple green trim. The other bottle is in the 'old' (read preferred) school where there is a Deer Park cooler. That bottle has turquoise trim. I think they'll be perfect. I actually wrote the pattern, so if anyone is interested I can post it!

I started the wild stripes blanket, but have to wait for the colors I didn't have to be delivered. When I first had the idea I got other colors to substitute, but now I see colors on Knitpicks that are closer to the ones in the blanket on Knitty and I like better, so I ordered them. They were sent out on Friday. Hope they get here soon.

I signed up for a dishcloth exchange of the Love2KnitDishcloths yahoo group. I wasn't going to do it, then regretted not doing it, then saw a post that they needed someone to be a partner for a member, so I thought why not? I'm psyched. Picked out my pattern, have the yarn and already bought the goodies to be sent in the package. Of course I can't reveal until opening day (Oct 1) which will kill me... but oh well.

OK... gonna to see if the felting is done. Happy crafting

yay

2 FOs to add to the list:

Interweave Knits Old World Booties by Gryphon Perkins
Yarn: Patons Merino
Colors: Old Gold and Evergreen Mix
Needle: US2 (yes, you read that right)
Recipient: one of those newborns next month
It took quite a bit of work to felt these. I finally worked on them by hand going from hot bucket to cold bucket. I think they are so cute though, I'm really happy. My blog friend hakucho reminded me of a time she was felting slippers and had too many in the washer at the same time and they didn't felt right. The first two times I tried felting these they were in a pillowcase with 6 sweater sleeves. And the washer had a large pair of jeans and a towel in it. After that they were in with the bag below with a much smaller pair of jeans. But they still needed some hand work. I think my washer water could be hotter and it would go faster.

Pattern: brown bag by Frances Swiecki
Yarn: Cascade 220 and recycled merino
Colors: Greens
Needle: US 10.5 (a more reasonable felted size for worsted weight!)
Recipient: DDs teacher for a portion of her winter holiday gift

Of course the original calls for one color and the body is a bit shorter. I got carried away while making the stripes and forgot to measure the length. Hardly would I have ripped back 2 inches, so it's just a tad taller. Now to find a closure.

I have more pictures to post but no time. Ravelympics ends in 15 hours. Must. knit.

we're back

to school that is.... I have some pictures of my room in its incomplete state. I'll take some finished pictures tmrw and one of my new 'room' too. You'll be shocked!

This is the old color. A cool (as in touch of blue) light green. Mind you the carpet is avocado tweed (think 70s) and the chalkboard is avocado, but I have a kelly green counter top on one end of the room and blue folding chairs... nice, no?

In this shot you can see glimpses of the chairs, carpet, counter and chalkboard. (hmmm all c words) Also the wall over those large (and very deep, rendering them a waste of space) cabinets is staying green cuz I wasn't about to crawl up there to paint. This picture doesn't do the yellow justice. Wait til tmrw. I'll take some GOOD pictures.. maybe DH will let me take Olympia to school with me!

Here I am crossing the park with my cart. The man in the picture, you ask? No clue! But he helped me get the cart over the curb and wanted to push it for me... I wouldn't let him. What if something happened to him while he was pushing it? Anyway, he hung around so we got him in the picture The K-1 center is across 4th Street from the park and the elementary school (grades 2 - 6) is across 3rd Street from the Park. Quickest route is through the park, which I'll have to do once a week. I'm at the K 1 center 3.5 days a week. But on the half day I start at the elementary school and then at lunch go to the other building. I'll wait for my room description for the picture.. it will say 1000 words at least!

I finished knitting the Interweave Press Old World Booties that they had as a free download quite some time ago. I made the gold ones and used gold wool (imagine that!) They've also been through the wash twice, but they aren't felting (Paton's merino... so it shouldn't be a problem felting) but the pattern calls for size 2 needles, and I think that's where the problem is, because there's so little space to work wiht. Tomorrow after I get home I'll try hand felting them, I think the water in the washer didn't get hot enough. They're cute as a button even unfelted, so if it doesn't work, I'm not gonna worry, but they're even cuter felted (If that's possible)

Ok... time for me to go to bed. 6 AM will be here faster that I want to think about!

<3-felt(ed) wishes

The baskets are felted. The darker one took 3 times as long to felt as the pink. It's the kind wool.. Makes sense that Vermont aran (designed for fisherman sweaters) would be heartier and more difficult to felt than merino. At any rate, they're both drying but I thought I'd post some pictures for all to see.

The first:

Pattern: Heart-felt wishes by Carol Bristol
Yarn: Vermont Natural Wool aran weight double stranded
Color: Handyed by me with easter egg dyes and food coloring
Needle: US13
Amount: about 3 oz.

The second:

Pattern: The same as above
Yarn: Patons Classic Wool Merino double stranded
Color: 210 Petal Pink
Needle: US 13
Amount: about 2 oz.

Interesting to note the size differences between the two baskets. The only variable was the wool. The Paton's fulled in 1 wash cycle. The Vermont aran needed 3 cycles to full. The thickness of the wool has a result on size but the texture also had an effect on the final result.

All in all, filled with chocolate, I think it will be a lovely gift. One that I, for sure, would love to receive. It's a quick knit and the only part I didn't enjoy was picking up the stitches from the bottom to knit the sides of the basket, but that's always my least favorite thing to do, pick up stitches. I'd make it again for the right person. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if the pattern is still available online. I downloaded it quite some time ago and when I went to look for it the other night, couldn't find it online.

update: Carol's pattern is NO longer available online. If you're interested in it, contact her, maybe she'd sell it to you.

hearty wishes

the basket is knitted.. well basket #1 that is. I dyed the wool on Saturday night and CO on Sunday evening after the kids were in bed, whcih came after I got home from visiting the folks. Then I finished knitting last night (after the grocery store trip and putting the kids to bed) Now to knit #2 so that they can be fulled at the same time. Unfortunately there isn't enough of the handdyed wool left to knit another, so I guess I'll hit the stash. I think I have some pink Paton's classic in there and it takes less that 100g total. I can't wait to see them after they're fulled (and filled with candy of course!) One of these days I'll knit for myself LOL

Happy crafting

the concert's over

and my kids did a great job... yay chorus! I am so proud of you!!!! While I was gone my own children trimmed the tree.... there were only a few casualties.

Part of DH's present was attempted to be delivered yesterday so the kids and I had to go to FedEx and pick it up after school. I was hoping it was my LittleKnits order. But that was waiting for me on the porch when we got home...some Noro for the Lizard Ridge that was on sale, and GGH velour which is like the LionBrand suede yarn.. thought I'd make belts for gifts (and dh and me) and some Queensland Collection Uruguayan DK: a blend merino, alpaca silk that was on sale and I couldn't resist. Pics are up in ravelry (ID = craftycarole)

Tonight I fulled the Lopi tote. It only took 1 time throught the washer and came out beautifully. I also chose some fabric to line it... we had this sheet in the basement that has a green strip that matches perfectly. The sheet we used as a drop cloth, so I can certainly cut out enough to make the lining and really think it will be perfect!

Late last night I cast on for the peekaboo mittens for my bestest friend. This is all I got done before my body gave in to the tiredness.... I'll stay up late and work on them tonight along with my sub plans for Friday. My own kids have their parent student teacher conferences Friday afternoon. Hopefully, I can sneak in a bit of shopping in the AM before they have to be picked up at 11:30. HO HO is pretty slim this year.

Lastly, here's a picture of some wool I reclaimed from a sweater I got at a tag sale that was hand knit in Uruguay. I felt so bad frogging it because of the beautiful two color work in it, but it wouldn't fit anybody in this family. So... the one sleeve gave me 150 yards... the colorwork is white that is duplicate stitched over the blue, so it's time consuming to frog.... but I think it will be worth it

Happy Belated Dad

My pop probably got the best birthday present.. he was released from the hospital on his birthday. We all know how he hates being in there, so I know for a fact he was glad to come home. I didn't blog on Friday, but we talked. Here's to another year dad...and make this one a healthy one!

Thought I'd post some objects that are finished being knitted but still have some work to go on them yet. The Amanda's squatty sidekick is fulled but needs a lining and button and
the fulled lopi tote needs to be fulled and lined yet.

I still need to block the keyhole scarf so after that's blocked it will have it's photo session and I'll post the details. I'd post more now, but we have a birthday party to go to (no it's not my dad's) and I still have some chores to do.

Happy crafting!

DD's craftiness

I finally have a picture of DD's art work that was in the gallery at the Baum School of Art from her summer class. We need to get it matted and framed. I love it!

DD has a puppet project for school that is due this week. She had to read a book and choose a character to make a papertowel tube puppet of. She chose Amelia Bedelia.

I think because the book wasn't much of a challenge for her... At any rate, I taught her how to sew by hand, wet felt and needle felt. Not a bad accomplishment for a 7 year old. She doesn't like poking herself with the needle when she sews.. I should get her a thimble I guess. I admit to helping her out. I drew on the felt and she cut out the pieces then stitched them together. She wimped out though and used Barbie shoes... at least she's clever!

Here's a close-up of the face. The eyes are little googly ones, the nose is felted wool added to the face and the mouth is drawn on with a marker.

As for me, I cast on Knitty's Jackyll and Hyde for DS2. He has cold urticaria and I want to avoid the hives this winter. I may add the face with white yarn. I like it because it will cover all his skin if he needs it, or he can wear it just as a hat. I need to make him mittens as well... plus finish all the Christmas gifts... guess I shouldn't be blogging but better off knitting.

I was spinning last night. I have all but finished the Targhee that is flicked.. of course there's more to flick AND I washed another Targhee fleece last night, so it will never end. I have 2 more raw fleeces to wash, then the fibers will be in varying stages for spinning. Should keep me busy this winter!

I found a pattern for DH's vest from the
Best of Interweave Knits: Our favorite designs form the first 10 years
. He likes it. Now to prepare the fiber: dark brown/black Finn.. it's so soft. I hope i spin it fairly.

nature discovered

I cut some Queen Anne's before DH mowed the yard the other day. I wanted to put it in some colored water for the flowers to take up the dye. I have some now that are pink and some that are light blue. I was checking on the flowers last night when low and behold I found a caterpillar on the stem of one of the flowers. I hadn't even noticed it when I cut them. I googled caterpillar to find out what kind it is and discovered that it's a Black Swallowtail. Since I have a friend who is known in the area as the 'butterfly lady', I wrote to her to ask her what to do so that the kids might watch the metamorphosis process. She told me how to make a bug box from a cereal box and what to do with it to make a cozy environment for the 'cat'. They like to eat leaves of plants in the parsley family (Apiaceae) including, carrot, celery and dill and ..... Queen Anne's lace flowers. This morning DD and I went on a hunt for flowers to keep this guy munching away happily. We hit the motherlode down along the canal towpath and as I type, our newest member of the family is filling its belly on the scrumptious buds! The DC who seems most interested is my 2 almost 3 YO DS He's thrilled just to watch it move. I'm thrilled to turn my kids on to God's beautiful creation! I hope we can successfully help it become a butterfly

Some FO's to post:

TriOminoes Bag

Put a knot in the unknotted end when finished, pull and tie a bow!

Thanks so much :-)

Pattern: The Lucy Bag
Yarn: Mauch Chunky by Kraemer Yarns
Color: Petunia
Needle Size: 10.5

I didn't use the yarn the pattern calls for, but my substitute met gauge. Having said that, I didn't use as many rows for the bag, or it would have been ginormous. It's bigger than I wanted but good for taking along an extra set of clothing for DS2 should he have a potty accident plus my wallet, glasses and a knitting project. I think I'll make the small ball later. I forgot to take a picture before felting, but DS2 could easily stand inside the bag and it came up to his chest..... really big!

Pattern: Lucky Warm Fuzzies
Yarn: Red Heart MacIntosh 50g skein 122 yards
70 Acrylic/30 Wool
Color: 1377 Dublin
Needle: Size 5 dpns

Once again I failed to use the yarn the pattern was written for. The woman I made these for works as a secretary at my school and she is ALWAYS cold.I promised them to her at the end of the year, but my dad took precedence with his felted slipper request. She wanted something machine washable, so I chose this yarn at ACMoore on sale for $1.50 per skein. It took less than one skein and I bought 3, so I think I'll be making some for teachers gifts! They are soft and cozy warm. I'll put buttons on them if I can find ones I like. Need. to. check. button. stash. Hope S likes them! BTW... there are other great patterns on this site, great knit fiction, wonderful charity knitting and firefly's blog is superbly written...

I found my long lost sock needles. They were hiding in my chair. I had looked there at first, but I think they were stuck way down deep. We had to move the furniture to the center of the room when the new windows were installed, so in moving it all back and cleaning, the lost 'lambs' returned. So of course, they were begging to be used. I've cast on another pair of socks. This time I'm using 2x2 ribbing the whole way and Sockotta yarn in black, white, blue and purple. I'm making it up as I go!

I also joined the Love2Knit dishcloth fall exchange. We send a dishcloth and an item of knitted food. I have no clue what to make my pal... couldn't tell here anyway ;-) I'll post a picture after I finish and mail it!

The boys' room is all painted Tango Blue (Valspar brand) with white trim. We're looking for a bed as I think IKEA discontinued the one I had posted about before. We're thinking L shaped bunks that have a dresser under them. Perhaps we'll go for this one but in the light maple finish. I saw it IRL and DS2 was with me and loved it! We're talking about refinishing their floor first though. The poor kids won't make it in there before school starts in 10 days!

DD's room is getting a makeover as well, from yellow to pink and we will most likely buy her a new bed too... downsize to a twin so mom can't sleep there ;-) the only problem is HOW to arrange what furniture would be there. It's a small room. We're thinking Captain's bed to save some room... she's growing up so fast!

School starts next Wednesday for my DC and myself.. I'm trying to get permission to come in late and stay late so I can put DD and DS1 on the bus. It's his first day of KDG after all! He's so ready... and excited. And we found out he'll have the same teacher DD had last year (they cycle with the same teacher for 2 years)

Well I have much to do and little time... I don't even want to think about how far behind I am on Christmas gifts!!!

Heart *felt* gifts - warning picture heavy

To start with, remember the felted LTK mocs I made for my mom? Well they were a tad too big, so home they came and back in the washer. Now they really should fit her perfectly. They tightened up in the width pretty well and didn't lose that much length, I'm happy to say

And now for the Easter project. I made this Spring Basket pattern for all three of my kids. Pre-felting it was floppy and messy looking. In fact DS2 thought they were hats. So I took a picture of all 3 in their 'hats'. They are pretty big for their heads as you can see.

But after felting, I love them. They're just large enough for the knitted peep, a CP Easter egg a Josh Early chocolate bunny and some small assorted candies

Pattern: Y2Knit Felted Spring Basket March 2005
Yarn: Patons 100% Classic Merino (about half a skein)
Color: Rosewood
Needle: Size 11 Knit Picks Options and Size 11 bamboo dpns

Pattern: Y2Knit Felted Spring Basket March 2005
Yarn: Patons 100% Classic Merino
Color: Denim
Needle: Size 11 Knit Picks Options and Size 11 bamboo dpns

The red one is still felting (it's third time through). The Paton's took one cycle in the machine but I used a different wool for the red one (see this post) and it's turning out a bit larger. I'm sure DD will have a fit that her brother's basket is bigger than hers... oh well... tough nooggies. I have to say, I like hers the best though. I love the way the colors of the varigation felted. The sides are stripey, the attached i-cord is chunks of color and the bottom is so cool the way the colors pooled. But I'm sure her 7 year old mind won't process all that.

I'll definitely make this pattern again... probably for gifts. It would make a great teacher/day care provider gift because it knits up pretty quickly and doesn't use much wool... You may even be able to get by on a 50g skein, although I can't guarantee that.

I was knitting the Monthly Dishcloth KAL in hot orange and once I realized it was the three crosses I frogged it. It just didn't seem right to knit that image in hot orange. Raisin would be a better color I think. And I'm not sure I want to do dishes with a cross cloth, so I'm going to adapt it as a bookmark and knit it in Paton's Grace in the purple color, with only one cross instead of three. Hmmm, something else to finish before Sunday!

happy crafting

How they felt

BEFORE FELTING

AFTER FELTING

Pattern: Little Turtle Knits felted moccasins
Yarn: Peace Fleece
Colors: Bagdhad Blue and Volgasippi Pink
Needle: Knit Picks Options size 10
Date started: March 04, 2007
Date ended: March 10, 2007

They're felted. I didn't felt them as much as I would have liked because I was afraid that they would wind up too small. Mom has big feet. They fit me in length but are too wide. I'm hoping they'll be just right for her as her feet and ankles are so swollen. As you can see they're to wide on me. I didn't alter the pattern at all for this pair. If I were to make them again, I'd make the bottom narrower, (affecting the top as well) and lower the front so they'd be less roomy. Most people that I know that make them make them for babies and it probably works well for them cuz they have such chubby little feet... but my feet are really skinny (the only part on my body that is LOL)

Still working on getting the project for school on Monday started. I have all the yarn in center pull balls now, and I have 13 started (cast on plus a couple of rows) so they can get right to the knitting.... Send me warm, knitty thoughts tomorrow afternoon as I face twenty some new knitters (ages 8-11)

Off to make banana bread with DD!

Being Felt Up

The slippers that is... They are all knitted, now to felt them. Mom, you'll be wearing them soon I promise!
Last night I spent a couple of hours carding Fuzzy... there is a LOT to that fleece... after all it weighed 8 pounds before washing. I now have a big rubbermaid container filled with rolags and still more to card. Is it possible that the fleece manufactures itself before carding.. I swear there's as much fleece in the bag now as before I was carding yesterday! LOL I also finished one bobbin and this morning started the second. I'll ply this when this bobbin is finished.. although I think I'll leave some single ply after this bobbin to make some socks.

I'm anxious to finish Fuzzy so I can start Petey and her sister. I have a couple more fleeces on the way… Lily (a ramboullet/shetland cross... her first shearing so she should be soft) who will be about 3 pounds skirted, a polypay that is 5 pounds skirted and ramboullet that is 5 pounds... so I think I have enough fiber to work with for a while.

I should probably spin up a bunch and send it off to my MIL to share... that would be nice, wouldn't it?

I also have to finish winding the yarn for Monday's school project and cast on 22 sets of 28 stitches with a couple of rows started for the little cherubs... YIKES....

perhaps there'll be a post with a picture of the slippers later... we'll see!

happy crafting

Snowed in

We had snow FINALLY. Not as much as predicted, but the weather was enough to keep us home from school [insert happy dance]. Of course DH had to go to work, so I didn't get as much done as I'd like craftwise, but... those are the breaks. I was out shovelling for a couple of hours yesterday. The neighbor on one side shovelled our front walk in the morning when he did his (so sweet) and the guy on the other side ran a pass with his snowblower on practically the whole block (another sweetie) so I went out did the side walk and back to the garage, and then cleaned up the front of all three houses so when (if) it melts the run off will go into the ground instead of freezing on the sidewalk. While I was out the girl 2 doors down came home and got stuck in the snow. When her DP came out they shovelled a spot for the car and then she and I pushed while he drove. It was my first time to finally meet them. Nice young couple, I could like hanging with them, but they're so young and I'm so old!

Well, this post is long overdue. Some pictures of my recently FOs and some spinning stuff.

I forgot to take a picture of the wooden box we decorated for DD's teacher for Valentine's day. But I did take a picture of the bookmark I made for her reading teacher.

Pattern: Monthly Bookmark KAL February Bookmark
Yarn: Paton's Grace
Color: Viola
Needle size: 5
Bead: Glass Heart

I hope she likes it!

This is the cloth that I received from my exchange partner in the Love2Knit_Dishcloth group. Thanks Dorleska. We got our partner's names in January and had to mail the cloth out by Feb 1st but weren't supposed to open until Valentine's Day. I was a good girl and waited.

Here are the slippers I made DD for her birthday (last Friday) I just finished them yesterday and felted them. Actually they are still a bit damp so she'll have to wait a bit before she can use them. She chose the color combo and I really love it... nice and bright for a dreary winter.

Pattern: Knitting at Knoon family of slippers
Wool: Peace Fleece
Colors: Perestroika Pink with Firebird orange
Needle Size: 11

I've said before how much I love this yarn, but I really do. I can't get enough of it. And as you can see it felts beautifully!!!!!!!

And finally, a picture of how my dyed rolags are coming spun. I'm very pleased with this wool and will definitely buy this fleece again. Fluffy is turning out so well. Now I need to decide what she will become! I'm thinking maybe a hat and mittens for ME! (that's a switch, I've yet to finish a project that's earmarked for myself.

Last night we decorated the valentine cookies for DD's school party that was supposed to be Wednesday. I thought it would be today because as of last night they hadn't cancelled school. But perhaps it will be Friday.

We may try to venture out this afternoon, although I'm a bit afraid of taking the van out of the garage for fear that it will get stuck in the snow in the alley. They haven't plowed there yet. DD's little girl bowling party is tmrw afternoon and I have to buy the stuff for the goody bags. She has a half day at school tomorrow. If I don't go now, we may wait until I drop her at school in the morning. I hate to leave things for the last minute though.

Wishing you warmth and fun crafting.

why oh why

Can't I get my progress bars to work??????

I've tried several times.... to no avail.

DD turned 7 on Friday.. where did that time go? The family (extended) came yesterday to help celebrate. There were 15 adults, one tween and 9 kiddos.... what fun we had!

Friday is the little girl party... at the bowling alley. One at home is enough thank you very much.

I've been in kind of a knitting slump, only getting to the needles when I'm on door duty at school. I started slippers for DD for her b'day but wasn't loving how they were turning out, so I frogged them (remember my name IS Penelope). I cast on again this morning and finished one today... hopefully the second will be finished by tmrw and I can throw them in to felt them...

I felted several sweaters yesterday with different projects in mind. I'll spill the beans later ;-)

Spinning wise, I've been working on the blurple blend. Not too quickly though. Time is escaping me this month... Maybe with the long weekend I can catch up a bit!

On the valentine front, we painted a wooden box for DDs teacher. The rub-on decals are next then top with a sealant. I want to make some cute little magnets for DS's teacher. and put them on top of chocolate covered altoids. Then she can store them in the can when it's empty!

Pictures later... have to go feed the troops.
